This adventure game starts in El Marrow where Mexican Manny Calavera is a travel agent in the land of the dead. When people die he goes to the land of the living to collect their souls, brings them back to El Marrow and sells them tickets for their four year journey to eternal rest. The best tickets are for luxury packages and can only be bought by those who have led a good life.

Manny needs to sell lots of luxury packages to earn his way to eternal rest. Something strange is happening. None of Manny’s clients merit a luxury package – they have either led bad lives or somebody has fixed the computer to make it look like they have.

Enter Mercedes Colomar (Meche), who Manny falls for *sigh*. She swears that she has lived a good and honest life and he believes her and not the computer. She leaves without the ticket for the luxury package that she is entitled to and Manny starts to become suspicious of his boss Don Copal and fellow travel agent Domino Hurley. He encounters Salvador Limones, the head of the resistance to the dodgy goings on; who recruits him to investigate for the cause.

Manny needs to find Meche who has already left El Marrow. He can’t leave on foot and the only way for him to get out is to be driven by a demon in a bonewagon. He finds demon Glottis and off they go to search for Meche with lots of adventures on the way.

Despite the title the game is not grim. It’s funny in parts and really interesting. There are 55 different characters and most of them have a human form but look like they have a paper bag on their heads with features drawn on them. Demon Glottis looks like the Honey Monster – remember those Sugar Puffs adverts a few years back. He’s big, friendly and cuddly and manages somehow to squeeze into the bonewagon that takes them on their journey.

There are hundreds of puzzles that give clues to help Manny in his quest. The clues are usually in the dialogue that Manny has with Glottis and others that he meets. Phrases appear on the screen and you point your curser and click on the ones that you want to hear spoken and hear a reply to. There are always several choices including some funny one-liners. When you spot and work out the clues you know where to go and which items Manny needs to pick up to use or save in his inside jacket pocket until later. It’s amazing just how many things he can get in that pocket without it bulging!

The game is split into 4 years. The first year is set in a petrified forest and Manny and Glottis have to find their way through and past some beavers with flaming tails. The forest looks appropriately spooky but it was a little too dark in places for my liking.

The second year is in Rubacava where you meet more of the characters and search for clues in bars, casinos an old boat, a lighthouse and a morgue. They meet the top man in the crime ring, mobster Hector Lemans who is one dodgy character. Manny and Glottis want to sail on a ship in the morning and need to find and overcome certain things before they can do that. I liked the Rubacava scenery, it was interesting moving from one location to another but I did get lost a few times.

The third year sees them travelling to the Edge Of The world, on the sea and under the sea and encountering a huge octopus. They have more things to overcome before they can go on to the fourth level and end their journey at the Ninth Underworld with a few more adventures back at the others and some new locations first.

The 3D graphics are great and according to the package Art Deco and Aztec inspired environments. I have never played a game like this before and certainly found the graphics and the whole idea impressive. I was captivated by the game but being honest I didn’t understand how to solve the clues at first and had to refer to a cheat site to help me. Once I got the hang of it the game ended all too quickly, but I still got several weeks of fun playing it.

As the characters are already dead they couldn’t be killed again. The designer gets round that cleverly by providing guns that turn the characters into flowers. It sounds naff I know but in this game it works well.

The background music is jazz and apparently swing era be bop. I was too enthralled in the game to notice it much but liked it when I did.

Grim Fandango was released by LucasArts in 1998 and was selected the best game of the year by Cnet Gamecenter and Gamespot, I can’t say that I’m surprised. It’s typical good versus evil with lots of entertainment and atmosphere on the way.

I bought my copy in a second hand gaming shop for £5 but would have been happy to pay more for it I’ve enjoyed playing so much.

I wasn’t too sure what to say about difficulty and complexity. For me Grim Fandango was very difficult at first but for players used to this type of game I would guess that it would be much easier but difficult enough to keep you playing for a while.

Obviously I can highly recommend it and will play it again in the future once I’ve forgotten what the clues mean. I just feel disappointed that there doesn’t appear to be a sequel, if there was I would be rushing to buy it.

It is unclear exactly when the Martingale betting system was first created, but most experts agree it was sometime during the 18th century in France. The origin of the name itself is widely debated. There is no evidence of a Monsieur Martingale having ever actually existed.

The Basics
If you gamble regularly, or even just occasionally, you may already employ the Martingale system and not even realize it. The concept of the strategy is actually quite simple. First, you choose a fixed amount to bet, usually a rather small one. For the sake of this explanation, we’ll say you are playing a simple game of heads or tails with a coin and betting $5 that the coin toss will come up heads. In this scenario, a winning bet pays 1:1, which means for every dollar you bet, you stand to gain another dollar on top of it. If the coin toss does indeed result in heads coming up, you would collect the $5 you won and then maintain your original bet of $5 for the next coin flip. You would continue doing this until you experience a loss. As soon as you lose a $5 bet, you would immediately double that $5 and bet $10 on the next coin toss. If you win, you have recovered your previous loss plus you have won your original bet, which is another $5. However, if you lose that $10 bet, you will need to double your bet once again and bet $20, and so on and so forth. Eventually, assuming you have the funds to cover the exponential bets, you will win and therefore recover all of your past bets, plus that original $5 you began with.

The problems
Of course, if it was that easy, we’d all be striking it rich at the roulette table. There are certain inherent flaws of the Martingale system that should not be overlooked.

Many gamblers believe that the rising popularity of the Martingale system in Europe is what actually prompted the casino owners to implement table limits. This way, the Martingale gambler would likely eventually hit a ceiling where he or she could no longer double their bets, rendering the system ineffective.

Another obvious problem is that for the strategy to be completely foolproof, one would have to have an unlimited bankroll. Exponential bets can get out of hand rather quickly. Even if you’re only betting $5 at first, after your 8th consecutive loss you’ll be betting a whopping $1,280, and even if you win you’ll merely be recovering your losses and only profiting $5. Although on paper it makes sense, to an extent, for most people it would take nerves of steel to bet $1,280 to win $5, especially with 50/50 odds (at best).

Yet Another Problem: Casino Odds
You might be able to challenge your nephew to a game of heads or tails, but inside a real casino you’re not going to find anything with such even odds. In the casino, the house always has the edge. Popular games like Blackjack and Roulette are favorites among Martingale betters because the strategy is very conducive to the game. However, it isn’t quite that perfect.

With blackjack, regular bets are paid 1:1. In theory you could use the Martingale system at the blackjack table by doubling your bet with each consecutive loss of a hand of blackjack. The reason this system will eventually and inevitably fail with blackjack in particular is because of the house edge. You may think that since it is just you against the dealer, then the odds are even. You may even think you have an advantage since you can see one of the dealers cards and the dealer has to hit at a certain point where you don’t. What many people don’t take into account, however, is that the house edge actually stems from the fact that once the cards are dealt, the player has to make the next move. The opportunity to knock yourself out of the game by busting is what actually gives the house the advantage, and over time of course they will always win.

Roulette is a different story. There is no real strategy involved since it’s entirely a game of chance. You make a wager that a certain number or a number within a certain section of the board will come up, and if it does, you win. Fairly simple. The most popular bets on the roulette table for the Martingale better are usually the red/black or odd/even bets. The problem here lies within the fact that the roulette wheel does not contain only red/black or odd/even pockets. There is also the green zero, and on American roulette wheels, the green double zero. Although mathematicians may argue that zero is actually an even number, the casino owners will disagree. Unfortunately that’s an argument you can’t win. What the addition of these additional pockets means is that the house gains an edge. If it weren’t for the existence of these “wildcard” pockets, a roulette player could bet on red or black (or odd or even) all night and have the exact same odds as the casino. First thing’s first. Even though I state on my blog that I don’t always follow basic blackjack strategy strictly, it is essential to know by heart as a guideline for playing. Basic blackjack strategy takes some amount of practice to memorize but after playing with it for a while it will become second nature. Please take a look at the basic blackjack strategy chart which lists the denominations of the player versus the dealer and when the player should HIT, STAND or SURRENDER.

Some key points of basic blackjack strategy are as follows. First, if the dealer has a 6, then it is very likely that they will bust (or go over 21). Therefore, the basic strategy tells us that if we have a 12 or higher to never hit. In turn, if we have a 15 or 16 against a dealer’s 10, then it is advantageous for us to surrender and take back half of our initial bet.

Basic blackjack strategy also tells us when to DOUBLE down or SPLIT a hand. Players with a a 10 or 11 will generally want to double down on their initial bet. Players should never split two 10′s, but it is sometimes advantageous to split other cards of the same denomination. It would be too confusing, I think, to explain in full detail the strategy here with words. The best way to learn the strategy is to print out the strategy chart and practice with it. After much practice you will have it memorized.

Why use basic blackjack strategy? If you can’t or don’t want to count cards, or just want to play blackjack for fun without a real intent of making it a serious business, then the basic strategy is perfect for you. Once memorized, it becomes second nature when you’re playing at a casino. It drops the House’s advantage down to less than 1% (around 0.44 % actually) and so essentially gives you 50/50 odds when playing blackjack… try finding another casino game with odds as good as that!

To quickly memorize basic blackjack strategy, I recommend printing the chart table out and taking it with you when you play. It’s not illegal to follow the strategy and casinos won’t mind you having a small piece of paper with you displaying the strategy when you are gambling at blackjack. In fact, most casinos provide these tables for their gamblers, however I highly suggest you use the table found in the link in my resource box below as there are separate charts made for different blackjack games with different rules. This strategy is the best one I know and what I always follow. It is for Blackjack with 4+ decks of cards where the dealer stands on all 17s.
