How to Make Scented Candles Successfully

If you are serious about learning how to make scented candles, you will not only need to learn the basics of general candle making, but you will also need to learn a thing or two about oils and fragrances such as which ones work best with different waxes and then of course where they can be purchased. Most online and local craft stores will carry the basic candle making supplies, and if you cannot find the exact scent you are looking for, you can always customize by mixing your own. You can purchase fragrances and perfumes in oil, water, and alcohol base but for candle making you should always use oil based fragrances. Since candles are made up of wax containing mostly mineral oil, this works well with oil fragrances as apposed to water based fragrances which will cause problems with your candles performance and leave you with liquid at the top of your candle.

There is not a lot of difference in creating a scented candle verses a non-scented candle, but there is some. There are several types of wax available. The first key to understand how to make a scented candle is to know the waxes. Paraffin is the most popular and readily available wax in the candle making market. Natural waxes such as soy wax and beeswax are more expensive but over the last few years have made a significant presence in the world of candle making and buying. Consumers are becoming more eco friendly and prefer to buy products that are all natural and leave less of a carbon footprint on the environment. Gel candles are made up of oil, just as wax candles are, but also include a resin material. If you chose to make a gel scented candle be sure to follow the directions for producing a high density candle. In a nut shell, high density gel wax holds fragrance well, where low density candles does not.

This is a brief explanation of how to make scented candles.

Once you have decided on a fragrance type and determined the scent in which you are going to go for you want to mix your fragrance oil to the wax. The best time to do this is immediately after removing the wax from the double boiler, or whatever heating source you are using. Slowly mix in the fragrance with your melted wax (1 ounce of fragrance per 1 pound of wax is the general rule of thumb but this will vary based on the type and density of the wax you choose to use). This is one place where more is not necessarily better. The most common mistake made when first learning how to make scented candles is over-scenting. Sure, this may not sound too terrible, and it wouldn’t be if the only problem was that the candle’s scent throw would be exceptionally strong, but that’s not what we’re concerned with here. The biggest problem with over-scenting is that it will adversely affect the candle’s burning performance. This is important, because a poorly performing candle can be a dangerous candle.

The biggest trick to learning how to make scented candles is to take it slow and be sure to test and document your results. By working in smaller batches, slightly varying your fragrance oil/wax proportions between each of them, and then testing and documenting those results you will find that you can quickly fine tune your exact recipe. And once you’ve got it nailed, simply rinse and repeat!

Candle Making Molds Made Simple

If you are just getting started in the wonderful and rewarding world of making your own candles at home, there are a few things you will need to consider and be aware of as you get going. One of these that is not often mentioned is candle making molds. A mold is basically the container you will use to pour your melted wax into. When the wax cools it takes on the shape of the mold. Remove it from the mold, and voila, you have your candle!

However, not all molds are equal, and understanding the basic differences between the most common types will help ensure that you choose the right ones for your first candle making project. There are literally countless different shapes & physical designs available to the modern-day chandler but they can all usually be broken down to a few different types of materiel that they are made of.

One of the best selling mold materials is plastic. This is often suggested for beginners and those less-committal types that like to put one toe in first to test the water before jumping head first into a new hobby.

Plastic is usually the best candle making mold to start with due to the fact that it is inexpensive and very easy to maintain and clean. Fortunately, the plastic molds can be reused; however the lifespan is not even comparable to other materials, like rubber, latex, or aluminum which means that as you advance in your own candle making you will most likely upgrade your molds to those made of higher quality and longer lasting materials.

Metal has been used for years to create candles. While there are different types of metal candle making molds available, the most popular material in the metal family is aluminum. This lightweight metal has many desirable qualities for making candles. It is easy to store, lasts much longer than plastic molds, and due to its smooth surface it produces candles of exquisite quality that are easily mistaken for professionally made candles.

While metal molds do last longer, they also come with a few trade-offs. The first of which is that, unlike plastic molds, cleanup usually requires more than just soap and water. By lining a cookie baking tray with foil, and placing the aluminum candle making mold on the sheet upside down, the wax will easily melt and drop off in a 150 F degree oven.

If you come to find that you too find making candles at home a relaxing, and enjoyable hobby, you might consider doing this as a part time business. The candle market is a very competitive and desired market. If this is the case, you may want to consider upgrading your equipment to rubber candle making molds.

While rubber molds may be some of the most expensive available, the quality of your final candle product will be impressive. This candle making mold provides you with a seamless form that is void of any lines, bumps, etc. One important tip to remember when working with rubber molds is to ensure that they dry completely after washing before using them again.

Candle making molds are a vital component of making candles, but there are many other important aspects that also need to be considered when first getting into this hobby. These include understanding the various types of candle wax that are available and how to work with each of them, learning how to determine the right size and type of candle wick for your candles, and understanding what types of fragrance and color dyes work best for each type of wax.

Candle making has been a hobby that many have found to be enjoyable and relaxing, and the perfect refuge from a stressful week at work. 6 Weather Instruments and Their Basic Purpose

Creative CommansWeather forecasting is just that, a forecast. These forecasts are based on information obtained from a variety of instruments. Although forecasting has come a long way with the advent of the digital age there still only five main instruments they use to get the various readings used to predict the weather. those six are: rain gauge, the anemometer or wind gauge, barometer, weathervane, thermometer, and the psychrometer.

Rain Gauges
Rain gauges in their most basic forms range from graduated cylinders to devices which weigh the amount of water to tipping bucket gauges.

Anemometer

Anemometer, also known as a wind gauge measures the speed of the wind. They are capable of relating the maximum wind speed and average wind speed. In addition to stationary anemometer hand-held devices are now available which are only capable of measuring the immediate wind speed.

Thermometer

These of course indicate temperature by showing changes of expansion and contraction of a liquid or metal inside. Conventional thermometers may use mercury, a red-colored alcohol or a bimetal coil to show these changes on the scale.

Barometer

Barometers measure the atmospheric pressure which is often stated in inches of barometric pressure. This instrument contains mercury in a pool which is acted upon by the air pressure.

These days, anaeroid barometers are more comman. These contain no mercury rather a small box inside. Changes in air pressure change the shape of the box which moves a needle pointed at a gauge.

Quick changes in atmospheric pressure can often indicate a change in the weather is coming.

Weathervane

In addition to measuring wind speed, wind direction is an influence on our weather. For example, for those of us in North America, winds from the south indicate warmer, more moisture laden air while winds coming from the north would indicate cooler air.

Psychrometer

This instrument measure the relative humidity by using two thermometers, one is covered with a wet cloth. Evaporation of moisture in the cloth lowers the temperature of that one thermometer. A special chart is used to compare the difference in temperatures indicated by the two thus producing what we call realative humidity.

Even with the advent of newer and better weather instruments weather predictions have become more reliable but they are still a far cry from being perfect. Mother nature still has secrets which we have not discovered.

Kids and Crafts

As a parent, you may be looking for an activity to do with your kids, especially during the summer vacation. One of the most rewarding things that you can do with your children is to put crafts together. Crafting can let children show off their creativity and skills.

Obviously, you will want to select crafts which are appropriate for your kids age and skill level. This can be difficult when you are working with a number of children in a classroom setting or when you’re working with your own children and they are of different ages and skill levels. Although it may be impossible to find one craft for a group of children it is important to match the craft with the childs skill so that it will be something that you will be able to enjoy with your children.

With a little research you can find projects which can be made by recycling what is normally thought of as trash. For example, newpapers can be used to do paper mache’ projects and candles can be made from old crayons. You will be able to go online and find some crafting sites to give you plenty of ideas on how you can recycle things like tin cans and tissue boxes (things that you would normally throw away) and make beautiful projects out of them. Sites such as http://www.cutoutandkeep.net/ and http://www.craftbits.com/ should get the creative juices flowing.

It is important that you do projects that are safe for children. You will want to keep in mind that your child is till developing mentally and physically. You do not want to subject them to harmful chemicals that may make them vulnerable or hurt them. Learn what chemicals to avoid and check labels. This is especially important for paints, glues, and clays. Make sure to watch younger children very carefully, as even non-toxic substances can be harmful if they get into a child’s eyes and, in any case, can be difficult to remove from carpets and walls.

You will find that the craft projects that you do do not have to be expensive or even messy or difficult. They can be simple, but because you are doing them together, they can be extraordinary. If you notice that your child is taking a real interest in art and crafts you may want to get them enrolled in classes so that they can enhance their skills and embrace that aspect of their world
