Dubs In The Dancehall. A Soundsystems Money Maker!

A Quick Crash Course on Dubplates – A Noob Friendly Guide

For those of you who are new to soundclashes as well as dubplates, you will want to read this article. In this article, you will learn the essential information about soundclashes and dubplates.

It all goes way back to when soundsystems has just begun in the year 1950 as an underground culture. This all began shortly after the World War 2 had ended. Jamaicans began buying large amounts of radios. The radios were bought mainly for two purposes:

1. They wanted to listen to the USA military channel.

2. They needed some sort of entertainment channel, which was provided via a huge continuous wave of popular American music.

During the earliest phase of this trend, soundsystems were made up of some very basic devices. They usually consisted of a turntable, a simple amplifier and pre-amp, and any large speakers they could find.

Soundsystems gather up all the musical equipment they could get and held live musical events all over Jamaica. Over time, local music began to rise as a culture and trend, and has since then replaced any other type of foreign music. With this happening all over the country, soundsystems started becoming the local celebrities and garnered more followers and fans than any other local celebrities. This is the point that they started to name there soundsystems. Some of the earliest were Duke Reid, Coxsone Dodd & a host of other smaller sounds. Now there are hundreds if not thousands across the globe and some of the top are Jaro, Mighty Crown, Bass Odyssey, Downbeat, and many, many more

As time passed by, the equipments used by the sound systems got better and better. A system now consists of several Disc Jockeys, sound engineers, and MC’s and usually plays Dancehall, Reggae, Hip Hop and Jamaican music genres. Events known as sound clashes are being held, where different soundsystems would compete for the crowd’s support.

These competitions usually are held outdoors. If not, they are held in dancehalls, clubs or larger venues. The way they decide the winner of the competition is easy – which ever soundsystem gets more support and better response from the crowd.

It all depends on the support of the crowd. The best way to make a soundclash really intense is by playing dubplate specials.

If the specials are new and exclusive, the crowd will show a greater degree of support. Without a single doubt, this music trend has boosted the popularity of many Jamaican musical genres all over the globe.

So, What Are Dubplates?

Now you might be wondering, just what dubplates refer to. Dubplates can refer to dubs, specials and samples. All of these three have their own unique characteristics which you will find out soon enough.

A dubplate is a recording done by some Dancehall or Reggae artist which “bigs the soundsystem up”.

The effect of a dubplate is simple – it serves as a very important endorsement by an artist for the soundsystem. It instantaneously boosts the stage cred of the system as well as the crowd response.

We must also understand that dubplates hold important roles in soundclashes for a few reasons:

1. It can be hard to locate celebrities and artists who are willing to big it up for you.

2. It’s an expensive effort. Expect to pay thousands of dollars to get a dubplate done from a top performing Dancehall Or Reggae artist.

For these reasons, the audiences usually hold very high regards for soundsystems, which are capable of getting them. If the sounds plays a dubplate specials done by a very popular and respected singer or DJ, then the crowd will show the support and respond at a much higher degree.

Dubplates vs Specials Vs Samples
Most amatuers always confuse the difference between a dubplate, a special and a sample. A dubplate is a song that any sound that can get from an artist, if they can afford it. A special is a song that the artist agrees to make for only one particular sound system, which means no other sounds can play the special, and it adds up a lot to the exclusivity part of the game.

A sample is very much like a special, except that it’s unique and has a style that the world has never witnessed before.

Getting Dubplates:
There are a few ways to get dubplates. Nowadays, we can even purchase dubplates online. But in the end it still comes down to connections and who you know. If your new to the soundclash game then its best to seek out others who you can trust to help you obtain dubs from smaller less known artist until you build up a trust for someone else to handle larger sums of money for the bigger artist.

To get a dubplate created by a newly rising star, expect to pay about $50-75 at the very least. The price of the dubplate goes up to $500 to $1000 depending again on who you know, the artist, etc.

Another way to get dubplates is via the traditional route. You will have to have a huge connection to get a dubplate this way, but if you do have the influence, then you will be able to locate highly respected artists and celebrities to do dubplates for you. This can cost you at least a few thousand dollars.

If your looking to hear how a soundclash is done with 2 or more soundsystems in a musical war we do suggest one of the top soundsystem CD websites on the internet. They have been collecting soundsystem clashes and other parts of Dancehall Reggae online since 1995. DJ14K’s Tapes R Us has soundclashes from as early as 1975 up to the present!

Stone Love Soundsystem…A Pioneer In The Dancehall Soundsystem Business

Stone Love made their debut with Reggae Dancehall music in the early 70′s, and have since become a big hit in Jamaica and other countries throughout the world. Stone Love’s creator is Winston Powell, or WeePow. He is also the creator of Stone Love’s soundsystem and the reason they have become what they are today. Winston grew up in Molynes Road, Jamaica, where Reggae music was very prominent and ever since his childhood, he wanted to control his own soundsystem. Winston had no idea that his dream would soon become a reality.

When Winston was only 17 years old, an acquaintance named Denton Henry told him that if he was interested, he had a component set for sell. Winston knew this may be what it takes to get his career started, so immediately he began saving money so he would be able to afford the equipment. When he saved up enough money, he purchased the component set, and that became the start of creating what is now known as the Stone Love soundsystem. Throughout the years, he began purchasing extra components to build his own soundsystem. By the late 60′s, Winston, along with a few others, began to do small parties, and in 1972, they got their first actual gig. That is when Stone Love became Stone Love.

Stone Love has become a very well known name in Reggae Dancehall music and other forms of music as well. They have played in locations all over the world and are now a household name. The Stone Love soundsystem has become very well known and is highly respected throughout the Reggae Dancehall music scene. Winston never imagined that his dream as a child could lead to such success or he would have so many people looking up to him and Stone Love. Stone Love has changed the presentation of Reggae Dancehall music and has led many people to pursue their dreams within and outside of the Reggae Dancehall genre.

Stone Love sounds still play around the world and anyone in the Dancehall community has heard Stone Love play. If your just getting into soundsystems and want to see how Stone Love plays we advise to check out DJ14K’s Tapes R Us for more Stone Love music and other Dancehall soundsystems.

Why Do You Need To Learn Guitar Scales?

Without getting too much into music theory, in whole guitar scales are useful for two reasons:

1. Scales are a collection of notes that when taken collectively help form a distinct feeling, mood, or texture. For instance, if you want to write a sad song, you wouldn’t pick out chords from the major scale, you’d get them from the minor scale. That’s one of the greatest benefits of grasping the concepts of scales (and in music theory in general), it helps give you a direction to commence from if you wish to create a certain mood or feeling.

2. Scales help you write melodies in a particular key or over a certain chord. Melodies based on a particular scale will oftentimes imply the moods, feelings, and textures mentioned previous, but the gain is that if you’re trying to execute a lead over a dominant 7th chord, it aids a lot to know which scales match up well with a dominant 7th chord – the mixolydian and major pentatonic, for instance.

Whether you want to learn guitar scales counts on what type of musician you want to be. Do you want to write your own stuff or play with a band? Scales give you a view of what notes fit along with what progressions. If you just want to be a rhythm guitar player who merely plays other peoples stuff then you might not want to bother with them.

If you know your scales, then when you perform with a bunch of musicians, and they tell you the song is a particular key, you’ll know which notes to play.

If you understand just the fundamental major and minor scales, you can understand how to form any type of chord, produce melodies, and harmony parts, as well as lead parts and solos, and NEVER hit a note that doesn’t sound right.

Most people that don’t learn scales will eventually learn these patterns on their own, but it normally takes longer, and they cant convey their ideas as well as someone who knows the names of all these things.

Scales are the entire basis of western musical harmony. Learning the scales will acclimatise you to most of the ins and outs of rock musical harmony. it would in all probability also be worth it to learn the other modes as well (major and minor are just ionian and aeolian).

Believe me, ITS WORTH THE TIME.

Have a look at my review of Guitar Scale Mastery and see if learning guitar scales could aid your guitar playing.

A Jukebox In Your Home – How Is That a Good Idea?

Who on earth would want a jukebox in their home in the twenty first century? That’s what you are actually going to have to listen to if you try to talk your husband, wife or partner into buying a full blown retro jukebox. They might have a point or do they? Full size jukeboxes are considered by some people as outdated and defunct. Only a few establishments still have them in place, nobody really knows if they are still functioning or not unless they drop a coin into the slot and make their selection.

But, if like me you are a nostalgic person and would love to have this fabulous piece of music history and memories of the golden days around the house, you can surely convince him or her and go get yourself the jukebox that you dream of. The great thing about jukeboxes is that they are really good looking with all the coloured lights and bright chrome features that they have. Manufacturers over the years have made a lot of effort to make the jukeboxes look as eyecatchingly good as possible to give them that happy, party look and feel.

Although jukeboxes are not supposed to be popular anymore you will be surprised when your friends and family come to visit just to see your new jukebox . We all love to feel nostalgic about the good times in years past when everything was just plain and simple. Parties will be even more fun when your guests gather around the jukebox and sing and dance to the tracks that they have chosen – usually golden memories! A jukebox is not just a talking point, one can get any party into full swing!

They are also a great gift idea for loved ones. For teenagers a table top CD playing jukebox could be just the thing to delight them. For us grown ups either a full sized retro will bring back and make good memories, or a mini model could be just the ticket.

A Jukebox could look great in your home. If your rooms aren’t large enough for a full sized jukebox there are plenty of good looking, functionable, modern table top jukeboxes to choose from. Just take a look around on the Internet and you will find a large variety to choose from.

Or, it is even possible to still be able to find original jukeboxes from 50 years ago and in working condition. You can think of one as a piece of beloved old furniture you might inherit from your grand parents. Like things that run in families, a jukebox is like buying an old classic car, or an old painting. Certainly it is a good investment of money, apart from the fun and entertainment to be had; twenty years from now it could be worth a lot.

How To Learn To Play a Guitar

There are a few questions that people ask when thay are thinking about learning to play the guitar. I’m, hopefully going to answer those questions.

How to learn guitar?

There are a number of ways to learn how to play the guitar.

1)Firstly, you can get a friend to instruct you.
This is a good idea just to get someone to show you at least how to hold the guitar and how to play the strings and hold down the strings at the frets. If you’re just starting and have never picked up a guitar before, this is a good way to get started and won’t cost you anything. Don’t rely on this method alone though. Just get the basics and then start to teach yourself from the other methods. You can let your friend show you some tips and tricks later on when they have time.

2)Purchase a book.
This is ok to show you how to hold and play the guitar, but not as good as someone showing you. It’s not free unless you can find out a good book from the library. The price of guitar books varies from cheap to pricey, although you might be able to find them at charity shops. I find that books are good for learning theory. Depending on what style of guitar you want to learn, you might not need to learn much theory. The more theory you can acquire the better, but you can always do that as you are advancing.

3)Purchase a video or DVD.
I’ve never been too keen on applying this method entirely. Sat in front of the TV screen or computer screen watching someone tell you to put this finger here and that finger there. It’s good for showing you the basics of playing the guitar and some techniques like bends, slides, and hammer ons, etc.

4)Get a guitar instructor to instruct you.
This could be the most costly way to learn the guitar. I’ve seen friends and relatives kids play songs better than me and I’ve felt pretty stupid. But, that’s all they’re being learnt, merely songs. I console myself by saying yes, you can play that song, but how much has it cost your parents.

5)Learn on the internet.
Once you can hold and play your guitar, or even before, search the internet for free online courses. There’s so much information on learning to play the guitar on the internet, this must be a great source. This can be free, cheap, or expensive but don’t be fooled into purchasing expensive courses that you can’t afford or don’t need though. When you’re ready, there’s a lot of good low cost and free stuff that will improve your playing. Learning to play the guitar on the net has all of the the advantages of the other methods. You can learn as much or as little theory as you want to. You can have someone on the computer monitor in front of you showing what to do and how to do it. You can download the info on to your computer and do it in your own time and at your own pace. You can download the guitar tabs to songs that you want to learn.

How hard is it to learn to play guitar?
It’s not hard at all. It just depends on how much you want to learn it.

How long does it take to learn how to play guitar?
Anyone can play guitar when they first pick it up, though you might not be able to play it well. Every guitar player learns to play more every day, it just depends how devoted you are to get to a level you consider good.

If you’re thinking about learning the guitar, or need to better your guitar performing, have a look at Learn Guitar to read reviews on internet guitar courses.

Jukebox Hits – My 10 All Time Favourites From The 1950s

The name jukebox is said to be derived from African languages. Some think that Juke comes from the African word jooy which means wicked. Others say that it comes from the word joog which means dance. Without live acts jukeboxes became one of the best things to get people up dancing for nearly a century now. People loved the music to be found on them and anybody who wants to pay for the privilidge is in control of what everybody in the room is listening to. The invention brought them closer to their favorite artists. The ones they like to know their songs by heart.

Jukebox manufacturers were well aware that folk will always love to have the most well known and successful music on jukeboxes. The more successful the artist and his track are the more likely it is for them to be on the playlist and be selected over and over again. Making a jukebox with popular selections more profitable for the bar or cafe owners and for the rental agencies.

Many songs have been played on them over the years, and still lingered in the memories with the help of jukeboxes. Sadly it’s said that their golden era is now over. Yet many public places still have them and you can play the most popular music on them and even sometimes find old favourites like Bohemian Rhapsody or Living On A Prayer.

To pick all time favorites that have been played as jukebox hits is a very difficult task as many songs are in the memories of a lot of people out there. Everybody would have their own personal list and often very different from anybody elses. As full size bold and colourful jukeboxes are the most evocative of the 1950s the following is a list of some of the all time favourites that would have been selected danced, sung to and enjoyed in bars, diners and cafes all over the world during the 1950s .

Picture the guys dressed in jeans and white t shirts with their hair styled with plenty of grease to make a DA or Duck’s Butt and the pony tailed girls wearing bobby sox and poodle skirts. We’ve got the 50s feel so let’s select the tracks that would have been popular on the 50s rock and roll jukebox.

1 – Peggy Sue – Buddy Holly and the Crickets 1957

2 – Heartbreak Hotel – Elvis Presley 1956

3 – Johnny B. Goode – Chuck Berry 1958

4 – Whole Lotta Shakin’ Goin’ On – Jerry Lee Lewis

5 – All I Have to Do Is Dream – The Everly Brothers 1958

6 – Rock Around The Clock – Bill Haley & The Comets 1955

7 – Be Bop A Lu La – Gene Vincent 1956

8 – Blueberry Hill – Fats Domino 1957

9 – To Know Him Is To Love Him – The Teddy Bears 1958

10 – Sea Cruise – Frankie Ford 1959

That wasn’t easy. I’ve had to miss out such as Great Balls Of Fire by Jerry Lee Lewis, Pat Boone’s Aint That A Shame, The Great Pretender from the Platters and That’ll Be The Day from Buddy Holly And The Crickets. That’s rock and roll folks!
