3 Levels of Dog Training

Many dog owners do not realize that there are several levels to dog training. These levels of training change as your dog develops from the most basic stage to the advanced stages.

Since some dogs have had no training, others may have already received some sort of training. Because of this, it is important to evaluate your dog to judge the type of training your dog needs.

The Basic Level

This level of dog training is the basic level and is meant for beginners whether they are a puppy or and adult dog. First level training would include actions such as teaching the dog how to sit on command and come when called. Socialization skills may also be taught, this includes socialization with both humans and other dogs. This is kind of like basic etiquette for dogs.

The Intermediate Level

This level is not for puppies as they are not mature enough but for adult dogs who have been through the basics. This intermediary training involves teaching the dog to heel, walk while on a leash, fetching and returning. It will also reinforce the training a dog has learned in the basic level of training.

The Advanced Level

This third level of training begins with not only rehashing a dog’s earlier training but adds to it with more commands such as teaching the dog to act according to hand signals. Other new commands will also be introduced.

Once the dog is accustomed to the hand signals, the advanced course can teach the dog how to stay beside it’s master while walking, even without a leash. It will also teach the dog focus, paying attention only to it’s master while tuning out all of the distractions. This degree of training is well suited for very obedient, well-mannered dogs.

As with any dog training, positive reinforcement should be the motivator, not negative punishment. Hitting and yelling at the dog is should not be used and may even produce other results which would need to be addressed.

Finding the right trainer and accurately judging a dogs level are important steps to you becoming the proud owner of an obedient pet.
