Anxiety Disorders – Dealing with Phobias
Phobia are one of the most comman types of anxiety disorders. Phobias, the irrational fear of a specific object or situation, are persistent and reoccurring. This anxiety disorder affects around 18% of the American population and is the most common mental illness among women and second most comman among men. Phobias can be so powerful that they can influence many people’s daily lives.

Phobias are categorized into three main types.
- Social Phobias – This involves a fear of involvement with people and social situations.
- Specific Phobias – These include such things as fear of spider to fear of flying and anything in between.
- Agoraphobia – With this phobia, a person fears leaving the comfort and familiarity of home or a safe area.
Cognitive-behavioral therapy is one of them most comman treatments to help overcome a phobia. With cognitive-behavioral therapy, you examine your specific thoughts and behaviors and reactions. This allows you to understand your fears and work towards overcoming them. This treatment is done in conjunction with a therapist either in a group or one-on-one setting.
Depending on your situation, anti-anxiety drugs may be need to help you towards your goal of overcoming your phobia. These medications, available for both short-term and long-term use and work best when used as a part of an overall therapy treatment.
A relatively new type of treatment called virtual reality is used to desensitize a patient. The patient is constantly confronted with their fear until they basically become immune to the trigger.
